The Little Monster Tap at the Hornet is a shop converted bar with beer shelves and stools across the front windows and up the left-hand wall past a television to stairs at the rear that I didn’t investigate because it would’ve looked a bit odd wandering up to the first floor when I was the only customer. In the middle of the rear wall is a single unisex toilet cubicle, to the right of which is a short serving counter with a white tiled back bar lined with taps. On the right wall above the counter and adjacent to a tall beer fridge is a screen with ten craft keg options and three cask that were Two Flints Santiago, Vocation’s Heart & Soul and Burning Sky’s NZPA. Unfortunately, the cask is hidden away so I ordered a pint of Little Monster’s Koh Pale Ale before seeing the availability of real ale. There was some background music playing and the television was off, but Six Nations rugby was advertised for later in the day. The barman was quiet, but friendly when prompted to speak by yours truly who was starting to settle into another all-dayer. Worth a look, next time I’ll have a proper beer.

Micro-pub and brewery tap with large windows on each side of the door and seating on two floors. I found eight of the ten craft keg taps on the bar-back in use, offering five of their own beers and three guests in a wide range of styles. The Joy of Sesh from New Bristol and Lost Pier's If Nothing Goes Right, Go Left (£5.80) were also being served by gravity form casks in the rear cool room. Worth finding.

Since handing over to Little Monster, this micropub has become much more keg-friendly. 10 tap friendly in fact, with 3 cask ales also offered up from the cool room, including one from the host brewery, who have now broadened their range.

The room itself is much as before and service at the bar was chatty and friendly, just as I remember from the last visit 4 years back.

This remains the best option in town in my view.
